Hey Barbara,
Thanks for the info.!! Both our boys were also born premature, our first one was 3 weeks early and Nolan was 10 weeks early!!!I just feel sooo bad for Nolan, first he spended his first 2 1/2 months of his life in the NICU and now this happened to him!! I swear,he has seen so much doctors!! We are lucky to live in a big city(Chicago) with alot of wonderful doctors.I completely agree with you that there are so much sicker kids out there, this almost seems petty, but none the less it's our children and it kills me to see him have to go through this part of his life like this.i think the worst part of this ordeal for me is that i dont know how it will turn out (complications) im glad your boy is doing well, take care and God bless you and your family. Oh, by the way i founded the video's you posted on youtube and it'll helped us alot when Nolan's cast come out in the next 2 1/2 weeks. (We hope!!)

Barbara,

Thank you so much for your blog! My 3 1/2 year old son just got out of his spica cast today, and I thought of you, your son and your blog every day through this. I really knew what to expect from what you shared, and so you relieved SO much anxiety for me.

Thanks again, and hope all is well for all y'all!

Hello,i founded your site when I was researching about kids with broken femurs. On the 24th of Jun.'09 my son,Nolan (33 months),fell off his bunk bed while playing with his brother and his cousin,I lefted them alone for 2 minutes to fix a corner of the computer desk so they wont bump their heads on it....then i heard the most horrible sound i've ever heard and found him laying on top of the bottom rail,as soon as i picked him up i saw a lump on his right thigh and felt the bone.he was brought to the E.R. for x-rays and it was broken at the midshaft. After he was put in a spica cast..we followed up with an Ortho. and the doctor told us he needed traction to realigne his bone for a better angle(the angulation was at 25-30 degrees)...the method is horrible..he would not be able to move while they put weights to stretch the bone, using a screw the size of a pencil put in above the knee.My wife and I was horrified to even think of the pain he has to go through and that we cant hold him for 2 weeks!!! We instead, wanted a second opinion and thank GOD we did!!!Our other Ortho.(one of the top ortho. in the midwest)said nothing about realigment. We are so happy he doesnt need that surgery!!The point im trying to make is that maybe you should post this on your site so parents can make the decisions with other doctors opinions.Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that you guys are wonderful parents, and your kids are beautiful!!! I know your site has helped alot of parents dealing with the same horrible ordeal. Can you please tell me how your son is doing now and if he has any shortening or lenghting of his injuried leg or any other complications now?Im just so worry that he will walk with a limp or other complications.

Thank you for the advice. Yesterday went wonderful. There were a few tears, mostly my son, but he did great. We took him to the toy store, in his wagon and then out for lunch. As soon as we got home, it was time for a much needed bath. He had a blast! We are finished with day 2 and he is starting to walk with assistance. This is going to take time, but he is back in one piece and can get around without someone carrying him everywhere. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time so I wasn't so shocked on removal day.

Thank you so much for your blog. My son broke his femur, at daycare, on February 19, 2009. Our stories seem so similar. We had a similar accident day from the day care all the way to the ride to the children's hospital. I am in Williamsburg, VA and we rode an hour to CHKD in Norfolk. I really appreciate you taking the time to write all of the information on the day of the cast removal and what could happen. My son's cast comes off on April 20 - 8 weeks and 4 days after the break. We will be bringing the wagon and pull ups. I already have aquaphor and will be getting some bubble bath. Again THANK YOU!

My son broke his leg March 21, first day of spring. He is 21 months old. He fractured his femur when our black lab knocked him down the stairs. He is getting used to the spica cast, and is beginning to crawl around after toys and roll over, just this morning! We are three weeks into the cast. He will have the short half removed April 28, and another 2-3 weeks after that, the long half will be removed! He has turned into a big couch potato, but still enjoys drawing and coloring and puzzles and blocks and his Little People Nascar Raceway. He has adapted much better than my husband and I, that's for sure. Nighttime has been difficult because he is not sleeping well. Diapering has been interesting, but we are now pros at it. For anyone whose child is constipated following the spica cast, our doctors told us to give him miralax daily to keep him regular, and it really does work! I am hanging in there as best as I can, and am really looking forward to mid-may when he can play and do all the fun things he's used to doing!

What a honey! I can't believe it was a year/13 months ago already. I still cringe whenever my kids start jumping - I wonder if that will ever go away. And I rejoice when Brian runs - we just came in from a walk up to the neighbors and I caught myself again - marveling as he ran back home. It's interesting how our harder experiences in life are the ones that teach us to be even more thankful for what we do have.

Thank you for posting your story. We are in week 4 of our nightmare. He is having horrible muscle spasms at night. They suspect electrlite imbalance is causing the spasms. The electrolite imbalance was caused by the enimas he had after getting impacted. He got impacted because of the pain meds. When his stomach distended from constipation, the cast was too tight & caused his intestines to shut down. They had to cut it off & recast him. His neck was out from the casting table & we had to take him to a chiropractor because he was in severe pain in his neck, but one adjustment & it was totally resolved. So we are still dealing with GI problems & he has to take laxitives to go & still has horrible muscle spasms. We get 4 week xrays tomorrow. Dr says if he sees enough new bone he will remove it at 4 weeks. He is 3 & his break isn't as severe as your 4 year old's was, so we are hoping for the best. He has both legs completely cast to the toes. We can't deal with 2 more weeks of this. We are really at the end of our rope with the stress & all his suffering. Did I mention we have a baby who is 3 months old!

Oh my goodness! What a horrible mess you are all in down there. My thoughts are with you and I hope you have power/water/help soon. The broken leg thing is not big deal compared with what you're going through now.

Good luck trying to find normal again. Hopefully that's it for the hurricanes this season.
